Bellingen Show 2026 - What Happened When Nine-Month-Old Heifers Took on the Ring

- 2 min read

Three weeks ago, these heifers had never been handled.
Not once. Straight off their mothers, nine months old, with no idea what a lead rope was, let alone a show ring filled with trains, children, escaped piglets and horses that would make most adults nervous.
And then Hayden and Jess got to work.
Hayden Carter has forgotten more about showing cattle than most people will ever know. Jess, who keeps this entire operation running behind the scenes, took on the job of breaking in these young calves herself - for the first time in her career.
What followed over the next three weeks was something worth watching.
The Result
At the Bellingen Show on 9th May 2026, our girls showed up. Ribbons were won. But more than that - they handled everything the showground threw at them with a calm and quiet confidence that stopped people in their tracks.
At nine months old. Straight off mum. Three weeks of handling.
That doesn't happen by accident.
What It Tells Us
Here at Brooklana, we talk a lot about temperament as a heritable trait. Quiet cattle come from quiet cattle. When you've spent years selecting animals that are calm, cooperative and easy to handle - this is what you get.
One of our young heifers tipped the scales at 391kg at nine months old, straight off her mother. Her sire, bred here at Brooklana, is proving to produce remarkable results. She carried herself in the ring like an animal twice her age - completely chilled, just like her grandmother, Millah Murrah Prue M4.
That's not luck. That's genetics doing exactly what they're supposed to do.
Our Team
None of this happens without the people. Hayden and Jess gave these animals every opportunity to shine - and they delivered. We're incredibly lucky to have them as part of the Brooklana family.
As Jess put it herself:
"From paddock to show in under 3 weeks for all of us! While it's no surprise that ribbons were won... the real surprise is how quickly these girls were ready to enter the ring. A true testament to their breeding and genetic potential."
Hard to say it better than that...
